On the first Sunday of The Village Church, Pastor Brady Boyd opens a new series in the Gospel of John, beginning with John 1:1-5. He teaches that Jesus is eternal, that He is the King we need right now, and that the darkness has never overcome the light.
Jesus Is Eternal
John 1:1-3 makes one of the most staggering claims ever written: "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made." Jesus was not created. He was with God in the beginning, and nothing was made without Him.

Colossians 1:16-17 echoes the same truth: "For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together." He has always been. He holds all things together. And He has witnessed all of human history, including your worst days.

Because He made all things, there is nowhere He is not. Everywhere a wandering person goes, they bump into Jesus. That is a prayer worth praying over a prodigal: that the One who made them will find them wherever they run.
Jesus Is the King We Need
Colossians 1:16 says that thrones, powers, rulers, and authorities were all made by Him and through Him. Every throne on earth exists because He allowed it. That changes how we live. Be involved in civic life, but do not be intimidated. Every knee bows to one throne. Jesus is the King we need.
Jesus Is the Light We Require
John 1:14 says, "The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us." Jesus became human without surrendering His divinity. He was hungry, tired, and tempted, so His grace is not theoretical. He knows what it costs to live in this world. Fully human, fully God, and therefore the perfect mediator between God and humanity.
"The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth."
Jesus has seen it all, healed it all, and forgiven it all. Nothing in your life surprises Him. You are not damaged goods. You are not beyond repair. And the story is not over.
